Commissioned Art FAQs
What is required to commission a painting?
A high quality photograph showing the subject in the position desired is a requirement for a highly detailed painting. For commissions of a specific photograph, or for memorial portrait paintings, Odessa will review the photo for clarity during the quote stage of a commission. Odessa is available for photoshoots if a high quality photograph is not available. Other considerations include: Canvas or paper size, budget and expected timeframe of delivery.
What sizes are available for commissioned acrylic or oil on canvas art?
Canvas sizes range from 11” x 14” and up. Large canvas sizes are available (Odessa enjoys painting large canvases), however, the larger the canvas, the longer painting time is required. Odessa usually uses standard canvas sizes for ease of framing, however, there are times that only a custom sized canvas will do. In the instances when custom canvas sizes are needed, Odessa will assemble the canvas from scratch. The best course of action is to determine where you would like to hang the finished painting and consider what size would fit that space best.
What sizes are available for commissioned graphite, soft pastel and colored pencil art?
Paper sizes range from 9” x 12” up to 30” x 40”. Large paper sizes are available, however, the larger the drawing, the more creation time required. Odessa usually uses standard paper sizes for ease of framing, however, there are times that only a custom sized paper will do. In the instances when custom canvas sizes are needed. As with canvases, the best course of action is to determine where you would like to hang the finished painting and consider what size would fit that space best.
Subject Matter
Odessa usually paints wildlife, pets and nature, but is also available for human portraits, and even has a portfolio of portraits who have been made into mermaids. She calls these specialized mermaid portraits “Mermaidifications”. You can see an example of a Mermaidification here. The example shows the original photograph with work in progress shots through the final piece.
How Long Does a Commissioned Painting Take to Finish?
Odessa’s highly detailed, realistic style requires more time to accomplish in general, but the timeframe is dependent on the size of the canvas or paper, and the choice of medium. Generally speaking, acrylic and oil paintings on canvas take anywhere from 4 months to a year to complete depending on canvas size and number of subjects. Graphite, soft pastel and colored pencil pieces take from 2 to 6 months to complete. Each painting is as individual as their subjects, and Odessa will give you a realistic idea of when to expect a completed commission. In addition to actual creation time, the preliminary planning stages with clients and shipping time adds to your painting’s final arrival. Because Odessa’s schedule is usually quite full, please plan ahead for gift giving. Christmas is usually much busier, so if you would like a painting to give as a Christmas gift, please contact her early.
Will I see what the painting looks like before it ships?
Absolutely! Odessa provides progress reports with photos of each stage of the creation process. Once the painting is finished, she will send one last photo of the painting for your formal approval before shipping.
How Much Do Commissioned Works Cost?
Pricing is dependent on size, medium and photo reference quality. Acrylic and oil on canvas start at $350. Artworks on paper start at $250. A 50% deposit is required before Odessa begins your commissioned artwork.
